2019 Review: European elections

As we approach the end of the year, we have collected a selection of the most influential political events of 2019. In this article, we focus on the European elections.

In late May of this year, Britain went to the polls for the second time in the European Elections.

The Brexit Party dominated in the UK, winning nine out of 12 regions and claiming 29 of 72 seats in the European Parliament. The European elections followed the local elections which took place in early May.

The Liberal Democrats also performed strongly, finishing second and topping the vote in London. They won 19.6 per cent of the total vote and claimed 16 seats.

The growth of these two parties was mirrored in the collapse of both the Conservative and Labour share. However, this was not reflected in December’s general election.

The Conservatives lost 15 MEPs and finished fifth with its lowest vote share in a national election since the formation of the party in 1834.

Labour fell to third place with 15 per cent of the vote.

The Green Party recorded their best performance since 1989, winning 12.1 per cent of the vote and winning seven seats.

UKIP, Change UK and the SNP all won roughly 3.5 per cent of the vote but none gained any seats.

Overall turnout was just below 37 per cent, the second highest in any European election.
