Budget to proceed on March 11 as planned, Leaders Council reports

Newly appointed chancellor Rishi Sunak has announced that the Budget will go ahead on March 11 as planned, the Leaders Council of Great Britain & Northern Ireland reports.

Former chief secretary to the Treasury, Sunak, was named chancellor by prime minister Boris Johnson after Sajid Javid's shock resignation during last week's cabinet reshuffle.

There had been suggestions from transport secretary Grant Shapps that the Budget may be postponed to allow Sunak some time to find his feet in the role beforehand.

However, Sunak tweeted this week that he was “cracking on with preparations” for the Budget to take place as planned on March 11.
