Leaders Council: Von der Leyen calls for "level playing field" ahead of UK-EU trade negotiations

The Leaders Council of Great Britain & Northern Ireland has reported on European Commission president Ursula von der Leyen's comments this week, as she reiterated the need for a "level playing field" on rules and common standards ahead of UK-EU trade talks.

Von der Leyen said that the bloc is ready to pursue a unique and unprecedented free-trade deal with the UK, based on "a zero tariff, zero quota trade relation for all goods", but stressed that fair competition and the upholding of social, environmental and consumer standards was imperative in making any such agreement possible.

However, prime minister Boris Johnson and foreign secretary Dominic Raab have both insisted that the UK does not have to sign up to such rules in order to secure a trade deal.

The full report may be read on the Leaders Council of Great Britain & Northern Ireland website here.
