A Message from Lord Pickles and Lord Blunkett, followed by A13 Steel Ltd's best practice article

The ability to listen and learn from one another has always been vital in parliament, in business and in most aspects of daily life. But at this particular moment in time, as national and global events continue to reiterate, it is uncommonly crucial that we forge new channels of communication and reinforce existing ones. The following article from A13 Steel Ltd is an attempt to do just that. We would welcome your thoughts on this or any other Parliamentary Review article.

Steel fabrication process
at A13 Steel workshop
A13 Steel is a family-owned steel fabrication business based
in Barking, London. A13 has a modern approach and
focus, and is now challenging industry standards. Founded
in 2012, it is currently the fastest-growing steel fabricator and
supplier in London, with an anticipated turnover for 2018 of
£8million. Managing Director Matas Gailevicius discusses how,
after discovering a niche in the market, he developed A13 with a
focus on reliable and efficient services, while implementing vertical
operations to allow full control over the costs of operations.
We have been supplying structural and architectural steel to a variety of commercial
and domestic clients since I founded the company in 2012. Following some
research into the steel market in the UK, I noticed there was a gap in the market
for a reliable and efficient steel fabricator, supplier and installer.
In response, we now provide a complete in-house service covering design,
fabrication, supply and installation. All our steelwork is processed in our facilities,
and is equipped with the latest technologies including plasma steel plate cutting
and drilling CNC machinery, steel section profiling and drilling CNC machinery –
all to a fraction of a millimetre. In 2016, we introduced our sister company A13
Scaffolding to our customers.

A13 Steel Ltd
the number one steel fabricator in the
construction category on Trustpilot,
where we have a 9.8 out of 10
customer satisfaction rating.
Our service is very reliable, as we
conduct all of our engineering in-house,
which enables us to remain in control of
deadlines and large projects. We want
to become the supplier of choice to the
most demanding clients, as we are able
to deliver on promises better than a
number of our competitors. The way we
do things is certainly challenging industry
standards, which have been diminishing
due to the lack of adequate competition.
We work in an honest and transparent
way to gain the trust of our employees
and clients. Our ethos demands that
we respect individual differences and
we provide all our employees with the
opportunities for growth.
Culture of ambition
A13 is a family-owned business which
has allowed us to create a supportive
and collaborative environment. Our
staff are happy to take feedback on
board, as are management, in order
to improve our operations on a daily
basis. New ideas that challenge our
competition and set new standards
within industry are what drives our
organisation forward, and are the
reason we have such high customer
retention rates. We are also proud to be
one of a few approved contractors for
Crossrail, Network Rail and Transport
for London, as well as other industry-
leading construction companies.
Having a net positive impact on our
local community is a key goal moving
forward. Currently, we sponsor local
sports teams and events, and we
also contribute to charitable causes.
We also offer great development
opportunities for young people looking
to get into manufacturing. Apprentices
are an excellent way to train and learn
about the industry, and we offer a
number of them full-time work after
they are finished. Our apprentices
often grow with the company, which is
vital as we are committed to ensuring
that we have a diverse and talented
workforce. Our aim is to attract and
retain the best people, while also
developing plenty of our own talent.
What we do
We produce structural and architectural
steel, commercial and domestic,
airside and railway which includes the
manufacture of structural steel frame
buildings, mezzanine floors, staircases,
balconies and balustrades for multistorey
buildings and handmade architectural
metalwork. All of these products are
manufactured in-house by contracted
employees of A13 Steel, while we also
have a dedicated client team who focus
on putting our customers first. We can
turn around in excess of 1000 tonnes
of fabricated steelwork in amonth.

Internationally recognised companies
commonly collaborate with us on
major work, and we have completed
projects including museums, police
stations, the German embassy,
schools and Lidl supermarkets. Weare
also part of an ongoing long-term
collaboration to supply and install
structural steel at Stansted Airport. We
have our own fleet of lorry-mounted
cranes and a total fleet of 30 vehicles,
which helps us deliver efficiently on
projects, while our great relationship
with our local boroughs – we have
worked closely with Newham Council
– allows us to ensure our work is
benefiting as many stakeholders
As I mentioned previously, we have
also recently unveiled A13 Scaffolding,
which now works hand in hand with
A13 Steel, and the additional branch
has added efficiencies to the business,
while allowing us to compete for more
varied contracts.
Doing things differently
Before starting up A13 Steel, we carried
out extensive research on the industry
as it was clear it was lacking certain
services and products. As a result of
this research we have made sure that
we exceed customer expectations by
providing vertical operations. By doing
this we are improving efficiencies and
decreasing turnaround time.
Health and safety is of paramount
importance to us, because ensuring we
provide a safe working environment
for our employees and the public is
vital. We have a dedicated in-house
health and safety, environmental and
quality management team.
From our conception in 2012, we
wanted to achieve all the necessary
accreditations. This has allowed us
to train all of our employees to the
highest industry standards and we now
operate modern machines and are the
first company in London to use Ficep
CNC machinery.
Future growth
We continue to create new relationships
with major construction companies –
including O’Halloran & Brien, Toureen
Group, Laing O’Rourke, LPL Construction
and MAG Group – not just in the
UK, but also internationally. Further
international growth is a key aspect
of our future plans, and the more we
continue to build our portfolio of work
abroad, the faster it should develop.
We will continue to encourage
innovation, personal development
and teamwork. By listening to our
employees and acting on their
feedback we can develop our services
and become the supplier of choice
to the best customers. As a team, we
want to challenge ourselves. Our next
challenge is to become the leading
steel fabrication company in London
and the UK. This is embodied through
our motto, “when rather than how”.

the UK

The Rt Hon Theresa May MP's Foreword For The Parliamentary Review

By The Rt Hon Theresa May MP

This foreword from the then Prime Minister appeared in the 2018/19 Parliamentary Review.

British politics provides ample material for analysis in the pages of The Parliamentary Review. For Her Majesty’s Government, our task in the year ahead is clear: to achieve the best Brexit deal for Britain and to carry on our work to build a more prosperous and united country – one that truly works for everyone.

The right Brexit deal will not be sufficient on its own to secure a more prosperous future for Britain. We also need to ensure that our economy is ready for what tomorrow will bring. Our Modern Industrial Strategy is our plan to do that. It means Government stepping up to secure the foundations of our productivity: providing an education system that delivers the skills our economy needs, improving school standards and transforming technical education; delivering infrastructure for growth; ensuring people have the homes they need in the places they want to live. It is all about taking action for the long-term that will pay dividends in the future.

But it also goes beyond that. Government, the private sector and academia working together as strategic partners achieve far more than we could separately. That is why we have set an ambitious goal of lifting UK public and private research and development investment to 2.4 per cent of GDP by 2027. It is why we are developing four Grand Challenges, the big drivers of social and economic change in the world today: harnessing artificial intelligence and the data revolution; leading in changes to the future of mobility; meeting the challenges of our ageing society; and driving ahead the revolution in clean growth. By focusing our efforts on making the most of these areas of enormous potential, we can develop new exports, grow new industries and create more good jobs in every part of our country.

Years of hard work and sacrifice from the British people have got our deficit down by over three quarters. We are building on this success by taking a balanced approach to public spending. We are continuing to deal with our debts, so that our economy can remain strong and we can protect people’s jobs, and at the same time we are investing in vital public services, like our NHS. We have set out plans to increase NHS funding annually by an average by 3.4 percent in real terms: that is £394 million a week more. In return, the NHS will produce a ten-year plan, led by doctors and nurses, to eliminate waste and improve patient care.

I believe that Britain can look to the future with confidence. We are leaving the EU and setting a new course for prosperity as a global trading nation. We have a Modern Industrial Strategy that is strengthening the foundations of our economy and helping us to seize the opportunities of the future. We are investing in the public services we all rely on and helping them to grow and improve. Building on our country’s great strengths – our world-class universities and researchers, our excellent services sector, our cutting edge manufacturers, our vibrant creative industries, our dedicated public servants – we can look towards a new decade that is ripe with possibility. The government I lead is doing all it can to make that brighter future a reality for everyone in our country.
