A Message from Lord Pickles and Lord Blunkett, followed by Ingenta's best practice article

The ability to listen and learn from one another has always been vital in parliament, in business and in most aspects of daily life. But at this particular moment in time, as national and global events continue to reiterate, it is uncommonly crucial that we forge new channels of communication and reinforce existing ones. The following article from Ingenta is an attempt to do just that. We would welcome your thoughts on this or any other Parliamentary Review article.

Unlocking content
is key
Ingenta is a global software supplier to publishers and other
content-rich industries. We built our core business by enabling
publishers to manage and monetise vast amounts of content.
Now, Ingenta’s cutting-edge solutions supports the new wave
of digital content providers and disseminators across retail,
media, music, education and healthcare.
For nearly 40 years, Ingenta has created world-leading software and content
solutions that enable publishing businesses to transform and stay current with
industry trends. We have deep knowledge and expertise in trade, educational and
scholarly publishing, which has been built through our close partnerships with
some 80 per cent of the world’s leading publishers.
Our global operations team partners and supports our customers wherever they are
located. Over the decades, we have helped shape and support the vast changes in the
publishing industry, increasing our partnerships and our suite of products and services
to a point where we offer unrivalled solutions for content owners and distributors.
The core solution for print and digital publishers is our technology for managing
products and IP, the associated contracts, rights, royalties, orders, warehouse
communications, subscriptions and distribution services. This solution is used by
large publishers such as SAGE, Cambridge University Press, Penguin Random
House, Macmillan and Elsevier. We have enabled the digital content transformation
with our content management systems, which serve millions of page views and
digital documents every month for a wide range of customers. Our complementary
advertising booking system helps some of the largest global magazine publishers
further monetise their content through advertising revenue.

Highlighting best practice
Our expertise gained from helping
publishers maximise their revenue
opportunities is now benefiting other
content-rich industries. Earlier this
year, we signed a deal with Sainsbury’s
for our advertising solution to help
manage their digital advertising
space. We are also positioned to
bring value to other areas of retail,
healthcare, banking, education and
inter-governmental organisations. The
opportunities continue to expand as
more organisations find themselves
becoming publishers.
The broadening publishing
Ingenta provides opportunities for
businesses that wish to leverage their
assets by extrapolating meaningful
content and making it available to
consumers as open, print-on-demand
or paid-for content. In fact, the
growing realisation that businesses
already create and disseminate
content, sometimes in vast quantities,
has driven a multitude of changes in
the need to fully leverage that content.
The sheer explosion of new content
has created a “noisy” environment
and organisations need to invest in
key technologies to make sure that
the right content is available in the
right form at the right time. Acontent
strategy backed with the right
technology is business critical; if your
content cannot easily be found then
consumers assume it does not exist.
This is an investment that more and
more businesses are making to deliver
their content effectively, make it
discoverable to their target audience,
and where applicable use that channel
as a source of revenue. Success
depends on being able to react swiftly
to changing demands with products,
the acquisition of content, shifting
rights needs, and increased tracking
needs. Solutions to these needs must
be easy to navigate, scalable and
capable of handling today’s challenges
as well as tomorrow’s.
Our position of strength –
core customer focus
In 2017, we partnered with Rosen
Publishing, an American educational
publisher, to launch our full commercial
ERP to support their business. By 2018,
after a successful implementation,
we grew the solution to support
integration of a newbusiness.
President and owner Roger Rosen
said: “It is vitally important to our
continuing success as a fast-growing,
robust independent publisher…,
that Rosen utilise a state of the art,
flexible and reliable system to meet
our customers’ needs and our own
growth plans. Rosen now publishes
across many formats, with increasingly
complex packages and bundles of
content across different product
types. I have confidence that Ingenta
can partner with us to support our
acquisition growth plans and ongoing
innovations in product mix which must
come speedily to market.”

Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng's Foreword For The Parliamentary Review

By Rt Hon Kwasi Kwarteng

This year’s Parliamentary Review reflects on a tumultuous and extraordinary year, globally and nationally. As well as being an MP, I am a keen student of history, and I am conscious that 2020 would mark the end of an era. It will be remembered as the year in which we concluded Brexit negotiations and finally left the European Union. Above all, it will be remembered as the year of Covid-19.

In our fight against the pandemic, I am delighted that our vaccination programme is beginning to turn the tide – and I pay tribute to the British businesses, scientists and all those who have helped us to achieve this. But the virus has dealt enormous damage, and we now have a duty to rebuild our economy.

We must ensure that businesses are protected. We have made more than £350 billion available to that end, with grants, business rates relief and our furlough scheme supporting more than 11 million people and jobs in every corner of the country, maintaining livelihoods while easing the pressure on employers. The next step is to work with business to build back better and greener, putting the net zero carbon challenge at the heart of our recovery. This is a complex undertaking, but one which I hope will be recognised as a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Through the prime minister’s ten point plan for a green industrial revolution, we can level up every region of the UK, supporting 250,000 green jobs while we accelerate our progress towards net zero carbon emissions.

With our commitment to raise R&D spending to 2.4% of GDP and the creation of the Advanced Research & Invention Agency, we are empowering our fantastic researchers to take on groundbreaking research, delivering funding with flexibility and speed. With this approach, innovators will be able to work with our traditional industrial heartlands to explore new technologies, and design and manufacture the products on which the future will be built – ready for export around the globe.

And I believe trade will flourish. We are a leading nation in the fight against climate change. As the host of COP26 this year, we have an incredible opportunity to market our low-carbon products and expertise. Our departure from the EU gives us the chance to be a champion of truly global free trade; we have already signed trade deals with more than 60 countries around the world.

As we turn the page and leave 2020 behind, I am excited about the new chapter which Britain is now writing for itself, and for the opportunities which lie ahead of us.
