Silver Swan Recruitment

A Message from Lord Pickles and Lord Blunkett, followed by Silver Swan Recruitment's best practice article

The ability to listen and learn from one another has always been vital in parliament, in business and in most aspects of daily life. But at this particular moment in time, as national and global events continue to reiterate, it is uncommonly crucial that we forge new channels of communication and reinforce existing ones. The following article from Silver Swan Recruitment is an attempt to do just that. We would welcome your thoughts on this or any other Parliamentary Review article.

Silver Swan places hospitality professionals
in some of the most exclusive residences
around the world
Silver Swan Recruitment is not a typical staffing agency.
Catering for ultra-high net worth individuals, they provide the
highest calibre of staff to clients around the globe. Alongside
adapting to a changing marketplace, they have updated their
recruitment process to keep pace with changing behaviours.
An interactive job platform has been developed, enabling
candidates to scroll through and select available roles on their
mobile more quickly and easily. Managing Director Philippa
Smith tells
The Parliamentary Review
how they have sought to
differentiate themselves from the competition.
Silver Swan Recruitment is a specialised domestic staffing agency with a modern
twist. We recruit the best private hospitality professionals from all over the world
and place them in some of the most luxurious residences, superyachts and private
jets globally.
After launching in 2013, catering initially to the luxury chalet market, we soon
expanded, helping our existing chalet clients source staff for their villas the
following summer. It was not long before we were asked if we could also help
them staff their permanent residences, which naturally led on to any other
requirements they had, including yachts, jets and palaces.
Recruiting staff who will be allowed into the privacy of your home is an important
process to get right. Clients no longer want to have to build trusting relationships
with multiple different recruitment agencies in order to staff their homes. We work
hard to build long-lasting relationships with our clients who we get to know well,
which puts them at ease.

Times are changing
With years of experience recruiting for
ultra-high net worth clients, there is
now a younger generation of UHNW
individuals who are seeking a more
modern approach to their recruitment.
Gone are the days of a formal,
traditional Downton Abbey-style of
running a home.
While there are still plenty of homes
requiring the white-gloved formal
butler service, there are many more
which are looking for a more dynamic,
passionate and casual level of service.
This can be provided by enthusiastic,
highly trained individuals with more
interesting backgrounds than just the
traditional formal privatehousehold.
Standing out from the crowd
By servicing our different sectors,
we have an amazing database of
highly experienced, well-travelled and
interesting professionals who have
worked on some of the most high-
profile properties, yachts and jets
belonging to the rich and famous, in
addition to a number of royalresidences.
Silver Swan Recruitment is, therefore,
succeeding in a very competitive market
as we are able to offer our clients a far
more varied selection of candidates
who bring a wealth of experience
gained from some fascinating places. It
is this mix of experience which elevates
the way a home can be run by bringing
new ideas, fantastic work ethics and
positive role models to young families.
What a career
Many recruitment agencies put a huge
focus on the needs of their clients. This is
certainly a very important aspect for Silver
Swan; however, it is our candidate’s
experience and the journey they have
with us that we find trulyrewarding.
When the younger generation think
about working in hospitality, it is usually
seen as a role they can start from as
young as 16, something they can do to
support themselves through university.
We have not met many teenagers in the
UK who dream of a career in hospitality
because they imagine pulling pints or
waiting tables as opposed to travelling
the world serving royalty or celebrities.
We aim to educate the youth of today
that the world of private hospitality
could provide exciting alternative
careeropportunities.
Enabling a young, inexperienced
candidate to enter our world and then
providing them with continual next steps
in their career is an absolute privilege.

The usual route would start with
working in a ski chalet for a winter
season, moving into a villa for the
summer, before perhaps returning to
the snow and stepping up into a more
luxurious, privately owned chalet to
refine their service skills. Ultimately,
this brings them to a point where they
can be considered for a permanent
private residence. By offering seasonal
and permanent positions, both on
land, at sea and in the sky, we can
support each step of their career.
Pushing forwards
As part of our ambition to be innovative
and forward-thinking, we reviewed our
recruitment process from the candidate’s
point of view, and decided that it could
be made simpler, easier to do while
on the move and ideally more fun. We
developed an interactive web-based
app to simplify our application process
and to make it easier for candidates to
apply for roles on their mobile devices.
Silver Swan Search was designed
specifically with the mobile user in
mind, offering the ability to swipe right
or left on all of our current vacancies.
There is also the option to filter jobs
by sector, role and salary. As well as
making the application process easier
for the candidate, users are kept up
to date by the ability to track all their
applications directly from their profile.
Giving back
Each year we choose a charity close
to our hearts and give our time to
actively support them by organising
quarterlyevents.
We have become increasingly conscious
of the way the industries we recruit for
can take a toll on the world we live in
and decided to support Plastic Patrol,
a not-for-profit organisation that is
tackling single-use plastic and its effect
on our environment. During the year
that we’ve partnered with them, we’ve
run a canal clean-up on paddleboards,
a beach clean-up in Antibes in France
and a city clean-up in London, and we
are finishing the year with a mountain
clean-up in the French Alps.
We will be supporting a mental health
charity from 2020.
Where next?
We are always pushing forward and
developing new areas of the business
to enhance our service offering to both
our clients and candidates.
In 2019 we officially launched an
independent private aviation recruitment
division to provide a dedicated service
to our clients who own jets. We help
VIP flight attendants, pilots, chefs and
engineers secure their next position.
As our presence in the Middle East
continues to grow, we have opened
a branch of Silver Swan in Dubai. It is
important to meet the people we work
with in person as often as possible,
and London simply felt too far away
from our clients to look after them as
well as we wanted.
Looking towards the future, despite
the economic uncertainty in the UK
and Europe, we are continuing to
grow across all our sectors, becoming
more widely known worldwide. We
will continue to work hard, learn and
develop to grow the much-loved Silver
Swan brand.

Rt Hon Elizabeth Truss's Foreword For The Parliamentary Review

By Rt Hon Elizabeth Truss

Even by the standards of the day –this has been one of the most exciting and unpredictable years in British politics.

The leadership election we’ve just seen marks a huge moment in our country’s history. This government is taking a decisive new direction, embracing the opportunities of Brexit and preparing our country to flourish outside the EU.

As international trade secretary, I’ll be driving forward work on the free trade agreements that are going to be a priority for the government. Free trade isn’t just an abstract concept bandied around by technocrats. It is crucial for a strong economy and for the ability of families to make ends meet. Free trade benefits people in every part of our country, as British firms export to new markets and people doing the weekly shop have access to a wider choice of goods at lower prices.

The essence of free trade is in the title: freedom. It’s about giving people the power to exchange their goods without heavy government taxation or interference. Commerce and free exchange are the engine room of prosperity and social mobility. I’m determined to tackle the forces who want to hold that back.

One of my priorities is agreeing an exciting new free trade deal with the US, building on the great relationship between our two countries and the Prime Minister and US President. But I’ll also be talking to other partners including New Zealand, Australia and fast-growing Asian markets.

And with the EU too, we want a friendly and constructive relationship, as constitutional equals, and as friends and partners in facing the challenges that lie ahead – a relationship based on a deep free trade agreement. Our country produces some of the world’s most successful exports, and the opportunity to bring these to the rest of the world should make us all excited about the future. It is this excitement, optimism and ambition which I believe will come to define this government.

For too long now, we have been told Britain isn’t big or important enough to survive outside the EU – that we have to accept a deal that reflects our reduced circumstances. I say that’s rubbish. With the right policies in place, we can be the most competitive, free-thinking, prosperous nation on Earth exporting to the world and leading in new developments like AI. To do that, we’ll give the brilliant next generation of entrepreneurs the tools they need to succeed. Since 2015, there has been a staggering 85 per cent rise in the number of businesses set up by 18 to 24 year olds – twice the level set up by the same age group in France and Germany. We’ll help them flourish by championing enterprise, cutting taxes and making regulation flexible and responsive to their needs.

As we do that, we’ll level up and unite all parts of the UK with great transport links, fibre broadband in every home and proper school funding, so everyone shares in our country’s success.

2019 has been the year of brewing economic and political revolution. 2020 will be the year when a revitalised Conservative government turbo charges the economy, boosts prospects for people across the country, and catapults Britain back to the forefront of the world stage.
